NEW SEASON NEW TEAM


It's already the 2007 season. I spent the winter in Hawaii, recovering after my ankle break and surgery, with my family, friends and new brother Benjamin. My Brodie Rodie bike took me for miles and miles of paved road adventures while I focused on getting stronger and having a great summer. Now, with a bunch of great new sponsors, a new team and some of the old sponsors I really believe in, I am chomping at the bit for the season to start. So stay tuned for more frequent updates and photos, hopefully and see you all at the races!

crazy hair

5 days until the first race.. it is all i want in life these daze... all i have been working for it seems. my toes and hands are cold. my trailer space heater has not caught up with the cold air that has settled around my body. i should get off this computer and snuggle into my two comforters, surround my self with my pillows and hope for sleep. my mind has been racing for about a week and a half now. more than usual. and i am wanting to feel rested. but my eyes are opening earlier and earlier it seems but my body isn't. i lie waiting for a little sleep. or i just envision back flips. how to approach the lip, lean forward a little then thrust back, looking up and back spotting the landing, just before i see it i shift my weight forward to counteract the rotation.. relax and land. this is all in theory. i have never done a back flip... but maybe soon. we will have to see.

Who is Responsible?

I question what I do everyday. I know that flying to so many places and making my life as an ambassador of brands, basically pushing people to buy the products I represent, is not at all environmentally friendly. I haven’t had carte blanche to pick and choose the companies I have been supported by. I haven’t been able to say, I’ll race using your products if they are sustainable, responsible, made with as little impact on the environment and the people that live in it. I’d like to have that power. I’d like to demand a responsibility from the companies I represent as well as a responsibility from myself. But honestly where would I be right now if I had demanded that? I don’t know if I would be where I am today. Which is still working in the bike industry and still believing I can take my love of biking and espouse it on others. I still believe that bikes can save the world. But I don’t believe bikes can save the world the way our bike loving industry is doing it.

Ride bikes, be happy. The Re-Awakening of Why I Do What I Do

Ask yourself why. Why do you do what you do? Why do you ride bikes or adventure, explore and push your limits? Probably for similar reasons I do. And that is for the joy of it. I embraced mountain biking because it is a sport that is challenging, competitive, and evolving in ways that keep it exciting. For me, these elements are hard to resist. I struggle with them, but love to face them. Over my career, I have spent nearly every dollar I’ve made and many months, weeks, days, hours; and what the sport comes down to, seconds, racing and riding for the love of it. As with so many things, we begin to feel the weight of what we do, all the elements that make it a job.
